The General Sherman tree is the largest tree on the entire planet. Sometimes when people think of a big tree they imagine a tall tree without considering the width of the tree as well. While the General Sherman tree is the largest living tree on the plant, it is not the tallest tree. What makes General Sherman the biggest tree is it's combination of width and height. According to the video posted to TailHappyTV, the width of the General Sherman tree exceeds 30 feet in some places of the base. The tree has been growing for over 2000 years to achieve this massive radius and height.
If you want to see the biggest tree in the world you need to go to Sequoia National Park in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This area in the mountains is a sweet spot for giant sequoia trees to grow. In fact, this is the only place in the entire world these special trees grow with any success. There is a special thing that happens in this region of the forest that allows the giant sequoias to live off of the moisture in the air blown from the Pacific Ocean. The elevation allows the moisture to evaporate and giant sequoia trees live the General Sherman tree can live off of this water content and sunshine alone. If you ever get a chance to see the General Sherman tree in person you should plan on taking a walk through the trails nearby as well. The nearby hiking trails are relatively easy to complete and they allow you to get up close to many breathtaking giant sequoias other than the General Sherman tree, which are slightly smaller than the biggest tree on earth.
