All About Hard Water Treatments

Water is essential for the life and well-being of all life – plants, animals, and humans. Rivers and lakes are sources of surface water, while wells are sources of groundwater. Water from these sources usually does not meet quality standards for human consumption.

Solid water treatment depends on the pollutants water contains. Common methods of water purification include water softeners, water purification chemicals, distillation, activated carbon filters, UV filters, and reverse osmosis.

Water softeners remove calcium and magnesium salts by replacing them with sodium salts. The water obtained in this way is not solid. Water purification chemicals such as soda neutralize the acidity of the liquid. 

Distillation evaporates the water, which is then condensed into pure water. It does not remove volatile organic contaminants that are distilled along with water. Activated carbon filters work on the principle of surface adsorption; they remove organic contaminants. 

Ultraviolet filters are used to kill bacteria using ultraviolet radiation. Reverse osmosis removes approximately 90% of all available contaminants using a semi-permeable membrane.

You can also use commercial hard water treatment systems which can remove the hardness of water and makes it useful to drink and to wash, once the water is softened then the problem with boilers and water heater is almost removed. Therefore, it is important to test hard water properly and take appropriate measures to purify it to meet quality standards.
